School Desks are Needed and Appreciated in East Africa

Are you looking for a unique gift idea? One that will change the life of a child in a remote part of the globe? How about ordering a hand crafted school desk.

A desk like the one pictured here is large enough to accommodate up to four children, and costs just $40. I've ordered them for many friends and family members.

Since 2006, Asante Africa Foundation has been improving the learning environments of children who live in remote villages in Kenya and Tanzania. Desks and other furniture items like tables, chairs, shelves, and bunk beds are an important part of this process.

In many villages the children must sit for hours on dirt floors or large rocks while lessons are given. As you can imagine, this is not the best environment for learning.

In addition, the teacher-to-student ratio is very high in most classrooms, especially the nursery schools where enrollment numbers are relatively high. Desks make it possible to create an orderly classroom with the most efficient use of space.

School desks are constructed of wood, or a combination of wood and metal, depending on the materials available in each area. Local carpenters who are hired to construct desks and other furniture items are able to earn money to provide for their own families. Everyone in the village benefits, but especially the kids who take pride in their desks.

Our comprehensive approach targets the root causes of why children are not attending school or are underachieving when they are in school. By providing a safe and healthy environment, children have a place to sit, water to use, and food at noon so that they can focus on their studies instead of hunger pangs.

Suswa Primary Gets New Desks
Asante Africa Foundation is always grateful to its generous donors. This project was largely supported by the Orion School in Redwood City, California.

Thanks to the school's fundraising efforts, new desks were provided for this rural classroom in East Africa. Many students had previously been sitting on the hard rocks shown below. The students were all too happy to toss the rocks outside when their new brand new desks arrived. Smiles all around!

It’s important to educate our children, no matter where they live, for they will grow to become responsible citizens of their society. Each child represents a future, the future of the community, of the country, and indeed the future of the whole world.
